Why do we do what we do? How does our mind shape our identities? My name is Mia and as a senior at Taipei American School, I have long been fascinated with the world of psychology and have long desired to explore the most complex science in our world – ourselves. Especially after taking an online introductory program from Yale University, many years ago, I became even more fascinated by the field, and the experience prompted me to eventually take a summer course in Linguistic Psychology by a professor from Cornell University. In the course, I learned the ways that speech not only impacted our emotion but also our perceptions, such as the correlation between the use of adjectives and culture in different languages. However, I became fully motivated to pursue psychology as I spent a summer at the University of Chicago, delving into the realm of Child and Adult Psychology. For three weeks, I examined children’s reactions to the world and the variants that impacted their emotional stability. My capstone project in the course was on the future of bilingualism and its relationship to executive functions based on the hypothesis of constant code switching in the brain leads to more advanced mental development.
